Dear John,
I hope you are having a wonderful holiday season with family and friends. As the mother to a three year old daughter, I am enjoying the holiday by doing something I haven't done for a long time, seeing this time of year through a child's eyes.
No matter our age, we all have wishes that we would like to see fulfilled. My daughter, Rocio, has wishes that are simple, and in most cases easy to grant. While I don't think we'll be having candy for breakfast, I have to admit that ice cream for dinner sounds like a pretty great idea.
The wishes we have as parents for our children aren't as easy, but they are possible. We want our children to have more and better opportunities to build the life and career they want to as adults. We want them to grow up in a world with less discrimination where they are treated equally and fairly. We want our children to become adults in a world filled with peace, where the air is safe to breathe, the water is safe to drink, and one in which we have preserved the natural beauty that still inspires awe in us as adults.
While our children may not know it, the wishes that we have for them really are the wishes they have for themselves, and we can make those bigger wishes for our children come true.
This holiday season, Rocio and I both hope your wishes come true, and we hope that in the new year, we can all work together to make those big wishes, the ones we have for our children, and for all children, a reality.
Now, I have to get to the grocery store because we are definitely going to need more ice cream.
Happy Holidays!
Shamaine and Rocio
