Hello King County Young Democrats, 
 

The end of November and December have been restful in this post-election season, but we are excited to celebrate our accomplishments and go into the new year strong! 

We have an exciting event coming up and would love to see you all there! We will be hosting a holiday party on January 6th, 2024 from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm. At this event, we will have a social hour with light food and beverages. Following the social hour, we will be discussing a motion to move from a county-wide organizational model to a regional model. Attached is the motion and a non-binding addendum for how the motion could work. We will also be talking about an exciting opportunity with the state party to get more young people involved in state-wide initiatives. KCYD’s bylaws allow the chair to waive dues for members, as such our chair is choosing to waive the dues for next year for folks who paid in November or December. This is to allow new members to have a full year of KCYD involvement as our membership cycle is based on the calendar year! The event will take place at Emerson Seattle, 125 Boren Ave S, Seattle WA 98144 in the club room. Details for arrival will be sent out closer to the event date. We are looking forward to celebrating the year and ringing in a new one with you all! 2024 is going to be a big election year and we need each one of you to accomplish our goals.

Legislative Update! 

• $40.6 million on the way to low-income Washingtonians as a result of AG Ferguson's lawsuits
  • “Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced today that his office is mailing checks to hundreds of thousands of Washington households as a result of his successful antitrust lawsuits against large chicken and tuna corporations that engaged in price-fixing.”- Office of the Washington State Attorney General

•  In an unusual step, King County offers $5 million for homeless shelters
  • “King County wants to foot the bill to add more homeless shelters in South King County. Five million dollars in one-time funding from the federal American Rescue Plan will be made available to cities to operate, build, or acquire land for new shelters in this sometimes reluctant part of the region.
  • South King County has a severe shortage of shelter beds compared with the number of people who need them, coupled with stringent restrictions on who can use the ones that do exist. At the same time, cities in this area have increasingly adopted policies that are hostile to living outdoors and in public view. 
  • In a way it hasn’t until this year, King County is stepping in and trying to nudge those cities toward actions that support homeless people.” - Seattle Times
