Here's a blast from the past, John – do you remember Rick Santorum?
The notorious hard-right senator and presidential candidate is no stranger to extreme positions: banning abortion in all circumstances, making contraception illegal, and even comparing marriage equality to 9/11!
And some of his most outrageous ideas – such as likening LGBTQ people to child abusers – have sadly grown mainstream within his party in recent years.
If that sickens you as much as it does me – I must alert you about the effort he's leading right now to write his opinions directly into our nation's Constitution.
That's right. Rick Santorum is now a senior advisor to Convention of States – one of the secretive far-right groups that's pushing the Article V plot to take away every right you and I hold dear.
You see, extremists like Rick Santorum have realized that most Americans have moved beyond their regressive social agenda. Simply put, they're no longer able to get their way in a country that makes its decisions democratically.
So instead of catching up on the progress we've made together, they're trying to take our rights back decades – and impose their extremist wishlist on every single American: from huge cuts to public spending to shredding environmental protections and even a nationwide ban on abortion.
John, the chilling truth is that Rick Santorum and his cronies can really do all that – and more – if they call an Article V Convention.
That’s because the Article V Convention has no rules – meaning there is nothing to limit the scope of a convention, no guidelines on who gets a seat at the table, and absolutely no promise of a democratic process.
All of this is why I’m scaling up my efforts to STOP Article V and SAVE our Constitution in the new year. There is simply too much to lose if a convention is called – especially with Rick Santorum now at the helm.
But John, the Article V plot has the support of millionaires and special interest money. Meanwhile, much of Common Cause’s funding comes from the grassroots. I wouldn’t have it any other way, but that means that in times like this, I have to ask:
