We know this is a difficult and scary time. We want to make sure that you are kept up to date on Sheriff Penzone’s work to keep our community safe throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
In case you missed it, Sheriff Penzone and MCSO put out two press releases this week:
SHERIFF PENZONE’S STATEMENT REGARDING THE PRESIDENT’S DECLARATION OF A NATIONAL EMERGENCY
“As we all know, President Trump has declared a National Emergency to combat COVID-19. Earlier this week, I directed the creation of a cross-functional work group, from various levels within the organization, to share information, develop mitigation plans, and communicate updates to employees on steps being taken by the Office to lessen the risk and impact to our workforce. While the number of confirmed cases in Arizona remains low, we are taking precautionary steps to minimize risk for our employees, while ensuring we can provide the necessary services for our community.
Per the White House announcement, there will be an increase in availability of tests for COVID-19 through a partnership with the private sector to test safely and quickly. It is expected that up to half a million additional tests will be conducted early next week with locations to be announced Sunday night.”
SHERIFF PENZONE'S STATEMENT REGARDING SECURITY CHANGES IN COUNTY JAILS IN LIGHT OF COVID-19
“Out of concern for the spread of the COVID-19 virus, I feel that it is appropriate to immediately suspend access into our jail facilities for volunteer or supplemental services. This directive will not affect access for court ordered interactions or legal obligations.
At this time, there are no confirmed cases of COVID-19 in our jails. I make this decision, however, as a precautionary measure to protect our officers, staff, and the incarcerated population to mitigate the potential spread of this disease.
Our newly established tablet technology, which is deployed throughout our jail system, allows family, friends and community members to continue to communicate with inmates through the use of video visitation, messaging and e-mails.
Further restrictions involving all inmate visits and programs will be evaluated daily as new information is provided by County, State and Federal Public Health organizations and in consultation with our inmate health care provider (Maricopa County Correctional Health Services).”
John, Sheriff Penzone and MCSO are working hard to ensure that we’re doing all we can to mitigate the spread and impact of COVID-19 in Maricopa County.
