Four years ago today, I was there in the Rose Garden. And I’ve committed to not letting what happened to Merrick Garland happen again.

Four years ago today, Barack Obama nominated Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court. Then Mitch McConnell stole his Supreme Court seat.

Help Us Fight Republican Efforts to Hijack our Courts

Friend,

I remember like it was yesterday.

Four years ago, I sat right there in the White House Rose Garden and watched Barack Obama announce that Merrick Garland, then Chief Judge of the DC Circuit Court, was his pick to be the next Supreme Court Justice.

White House Rose Garden(My view from the Rose Garden)

I knew I was watching history in the making, but never imagined the depths Mitch McConnell would sink to next:

McConnell was relentless in stealing this Supreme Court seat from President Obama. He broke 100 years of precedent to deny Garland a hearing. Many Republican Senators refused to even meet with Garland. They were so intent on using our courts to impose their right-wing agenda that they didn’t care about the damage to our democracy.

Then, Donald Trump became president. And when his nominee, Neil Gorsuch, was too extreme to earn enough votes to be confirmed, McConnell changed the Senate Rules to ram him through. The Republican theft of a Supreme Court seat was complete.

Neil Gorsuch’s seat on the Supreme Court should have been Merrick Garland’s, plain and simple. But thanks to Mitch McConnell and his co-conspirators on the right, this seat was stolen –– and is now filled by a justice who consistently rules for corporations, the powerful, and the Republican Party.

We need to let Mitch McConnell know we haven’t forgotten what he did to Merrick Garland and won’t let him get away with it. Rush a contribution before tomorrow night and help us stop the right-wing takeover of our judiciary.

I’ve spent my whole career fighting for justice and equality. After Neil Gorsuch was sworn into a stolen Supreme Court seat, I knew progressives needed to do more to stop the hijacking of our courts, and I wanted to help lead that movement.

So I co-founded Demand Justice, an organization committed to fighting for our courts –– and ensuring that what happened to Merrick Garland does not happen again. We’re not only sounding the alarm about right-wing extremists but also working toward a positive vision of our courts that would restore balance and legitimacy. There’s still so much more to be done. Democracy is at stake, and progressives have to come together.

As we remember Merrick Garland’s stolen nomination, join our fight to make sure that Republicans never steal a Supreme Court seat again. Chip in now and support our people-powered movement to demand justice.

So much depends on our courts, friend. As I write this, I’m remembering the hope I felt watching Barack Obama nominate Merrick Garland and the possibility of a more progressive Supreme Court. I’m not going to let this injustice stand. Mitch McConnell may think this fight is over and that he’s captured the Court for a generation –– but we’re not going anywhere.

Thank you for all that you do,

Chris

Donald Trump is openly taking over our courts, and if we let him succeed, his nominees will keep his hateful vision alive on the federal bench for decades. Join Demand Justice and take a stand to protect our nation's courts.
