Hi, John, it’s Nicolas O’Rourke. I’m a pastor and organizer — and the newest Working Families Party city councilmember in Philadelphia.
In a few moments, I’m going to ask you to make an end-of-year contribution to the Working Families Party and fuel our shared fight to keep delivering victories for working people in 2024. But first, I wanted to take a moment to explain why fundraisers like this are so important.
This year, we ran a historic, third-party campaign against billionaire-backed Super PACs and an entrenched political establishment to leave Philadelphia’s Republican Party in the dustbin of history, and return power where it belongs — in the hands of the community.
Together, we showed that when we reach out to our neighbors of all backgrounds, and build coalitions to facilitate real and unified change, we can’t be stopped.
And we didn’t just erode Republican influence in Philadelphia — we laid the groundwork for progressive candidates in other major cities across the country, and for mobilizing the multiracial working class in the 2024 elections and beyond.
But it was only because of the organizing of groups like the Working Families Party and activists like you that a grassroots progressive candidate like me was able to defy the odds and overcome the obstacles that our system puts in front of us.
I ran my campaign on a vision for a Philadelphia that leads the nation in local, transformative policy-making that supports youth, houses neighbors, empowers workers, and provides communities with all of the resources they need to thrive.
Today, I can proudly say that vision is one step closer to reality.
But my work — our work — isn't done yet. We need to keep building a country for the many, with strong schools, good jobs, and safe communities. We need to transform the status quo that has held this country back for too long.
