Every year I feel like we say it’s been an unprecedented year because the attacks continue to increase. But I do think that 2023 takes the cake for the year with the most change.

In December of 2016, I distinctly remember emailing you all: “In 2016, we saw a record number of anti-trans bills: 46 bills introduced in 14 statehouses across the nation. This is four times as many as 2015.”

This year there were more than 500 anti-trans bills.

500 bills intended to prevent trans people from living as their authentic selves by depriving them of access to life-saving healthcare, accurate identity documents, and full participation in society.
And 150+ will carry over into the 2024 state legislative session. This means without introducing one single anti-trans bill, we already have 150+ bills to fight.

But these 150+ bills are continuing because we fought. Because they have not won. And they will not win if stay together in this fight.
