Hi Friend,
As we near the end of 2023, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on the past month and year. Despite the hyper-partisan rancour surrounding us, I am regularly reminded that Parliament is a place where tangible progress can be made, and where Green MPs can have an outsized impact.
I’m proud I’ve been able to drive a national conversation about the need for a windfall tax on Big Oil’s excess profits. It’s a move that could raise more than $4 billion a year. That money could fund crucial climate solutions and improve affordability for Canadians. For instance, it could help replenish and expand the Greener Homes Grant program, incentivizing no-cost deep energy retrofits across the country.
We know Canadians are looking for elected officials who prioritize people over partisanship and democracy over politics. We proved it again in the November 30th provincial by-election in my riding of Kitchener Centre, where Aislinn Clancy was elected, joining Mike Schreiner as the second Green MPP at Queens Park! I’m excited for our community, knowing Aislinn has what it takes to resist everything that is corrosive about politics and stay focused on making progress on our priorities.
This victory serves as a powerful reminder that a Green vote can elect a Green candidate!
And we can do this in dozens of other ridings across Canada, building on the growing momentum here in Ontario. But to succeed, we need a few key ingredients:
- Committed and respected community leaders to run as Greens,
- A strong, committed team of volunteers, and a willingness to knock on every door and listen deeply,
- To start early, understanding it may take multiple election cycles to build up to a win, and
- Financial support from committed and generous donors like yourself.
DonateAs Green MPs, we can offer real solutions for challenges facing Canadians. In addition to leading a national conversation on a windfall tax for Big Oil, here are just a few examples of what my team and I accomplished in 2023:
- Led a cross-party initiative to fast-track the Canada Disability Benefit legislation, including a key amendment to ensure it will be indexed to inflation
- Helped secure the first-ever national parliamentary debate and vote on a citizens’ assembly on electoral reform
- Continued to pressure the federal government on the importance of transitioning away from fossil fuels–did you know major oil companies have met with the federal government 2,000 times in efforts to weaken the oil and gas emissions cap?
Imagine what we could do with more Green MPs after the next election!
We know what it takes to win and bring more Greens MPs into the House of Commons, creating the change necessary to ensure a livable, sustainable future for Canadians.
This December, the Green Party of Canada has set an ambitious fundraising target of $600,000 to prepare for the next election, whenever it is called. We’re nearly halfway to that target with 9 days to go.
Will you chip in? Your contribution will help us prepare for a breakthrough in ridings across the country.
I know because it’s exactly how we turned Kitchener Centre Green–twice.
DonateTogether we can replicate this success right across the country!
Thank you,
Mike Morrice
MP for Kitchener Centre
Green Party of Canada
P.S. Did you know you can get up to 75% of your donation back with your tax credit? It's the most cost-effective way to support Green politics.
