Democracy Was on the Docket in 2023, and It Won ([link removed])

By Marc Elias

Democracy Docket is taking a well-deserved break next week, but will still be publishing content for our readers — we will be releasing our annual best and worst of the year piece as well as a compilation of our guest contributors’ content throughout 2023.

Coming up in January is our annual data focused report, exploring the litigation trends and impacts in 2023. Don’t want to wait until then? Get a taste of the year in review with Marc’s recently released piece ([link removed]) on how democracy was on the docket — and won.

As we end the year, we are waiting on key pending decisions in lawsuits challenging:
* Provisions ([link removed]) of Texas' voter suppression law Senate Bill 1.
* Arizona’s restrictive proof of citizenship requirements ([link removed]) .
* Florida’s congressional map for violating ([link removed]) the 14th and 15th Amendments by “cracking” communities of color.
* True the Vote's voter intimidation operation for violating ([link removed]) the Voting Rights Act.
* South Carolina’s congressional map for being racially gerrymandered ([link removed]) .
* Three separate suppressive voting laws enacted ([link removed]) by Montana’s Republican Legislature.
* Utah’s congressional map for being unconstitutionally gerrymandered ([link removed]) in favor of Republicans.
* Louisiana’s congressional map for violating ([link removed]) Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
* Wisconsin’s legislative maps for being unconstitutional partisan gerrymanders ([link removed]) in favor of Republicans.
* Texas’ “wet signature requirement” for violating ([link removed]) the Civil Rights Act and the First and 14th Amendments.
* Georgia’s congressional and legislative districts for violating ([link removed]) Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
* Arkansas’ state House maps for violating ([link removed]) Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
