Dear John,

It’s really hard to think about the next 10 years while we are in the middle of a crisis and taking it day by day. But the 2020 Census is happening now and it will shape the next 10 years of representation and resources for our community. It couldn't be more important for you to fill it out and make sure all your friends, family and neighbors get counted. Thankfully, filling out the Census only takes a few minutes and is easy to do from home!

Every household in the U.S. should receive an invitation to participate in the 2020 Census in the mail sometime before March 20. Once you receive that communication, which contains a unique code, you can respond by mail. You can visit [link removed] [[link removed]] to fill out the Census online, or by phone at 844-330-2020 (English) or 844-468-2020 (Spanish).

Ensuring that we get a complete and accurate count of everyone living in the U.S. (and we really mean everyone!) is critical to ensuring that our communities get the resources and representation that we deserve for the next 10 years.

The decennial U.S. population count is used to make decisions about how funding is allocated from everything from road repair to Medicare. Brooklyn has been undercounted in the past, we cannot let that happen this time. Political representation on the line (New York is at risk of losing a Congressional seat or two, not to mention local and state district boundaries). The Census data is used to determine where to build new schools, hospitals, and supermarkets. The Census count will have an impact on nearly every aspect of how government serves New Yorkers for the next decade.

Everyone should fill out the Census, regardless of citizenship status. Last year the courts blocked the Trump administration’s effort to weaponize the Census as a tool against immigrants. There will be NO citizenship question on the Census. The data collected by the Census will be private, it will only be used in aggregate and will not be accessible to law enforcement, ICE, FBI, etc.

If you have questions about how to fill out the census, call or email us at 718-499-1090 or [email protected]. We’ll be organizing volunteers to send out reminders by text in the coming weeks.

Ensuring that all of our communities get counted in the Census is critical to the future of our democracy. We simply cannot afford to be undercounted.

Brad

P.S. We can’t let social distancing get in the way of a complete and accurate count. Please encourage family and friends to fill out the Census too! You can post this graphic [[link removed]] or a photo of yourself filling it out to encourage them.
