Hi John, it’s Adam Rappaport here, General Counsel for CREW.
This year, CREW is celebrating 20 years of taking on big fights against powerful opponents, from the president of the United States to deep-pocketed dark money donors – and as our win in Colorado this week showed, we’re not done yet.
Can I count on you to pitch in $20 (which will be matched to $40) to help us continue this important work for the coming years? [[link removed]]

I’ve been with CREW since 2009, and over the years, we’ve accomplished much to be proud of.
One of the biggest moments from when I started with CREW was the Citizens United ruling from the Supreme Court.
In the wake of the Citizens United decision in early 2010, the FEC, the agency charged with enforcing campaign finance law, essentially stopped doing its job. We filed complaints and lawsuits in those first years after the Citizens United decision that led directly to record-breaking fines and court rulings that opened up a huge category of dark money spending to disclosure.
CREW became known for our work bringing transparency and accountability to a post- Citizens United world. We took aggressive legal action against dark money groups, revealed information about those financing them and highlighted the failures of the agencies that supposedly regulate them—and we’re still doing that important work today. (You might be surprised how long these types of lawsuits can drag on.)
Today, CREW continues the fight to get big money out of our politics. If you can, please support our work with a matched donation today → [[link removed]]If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately:

2016 was another big year for CREW. When Donald Trump announced he was running for president, it was a pivotal moment for our organization and the work that we do.
In 2016, CREW filed multiple complaints with the IRS against the Donald J. Trump Foundation. The Foundation claimed on its tax forms that it did not give money to political organizations or engage in political activity, but in fact it did donate to a political organization affiliated with the Florida attorney general–whose office was reportedly investigating Trump University at the time.
Little did we know that was just the first of many scandals to come regarding Donald Trump's finances. We ended up working with the Washington Post regarding then-candidate Trump’s potential conflicts of interest, urging him to sell his business interests.
On Donald Trump’s first full day in the Oval Office, CREW sued him for violating the Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution, stemming from his refusal to divest from his business interests while president. That was the first time those key constitutional provisions had ever been tested in court. Over the course of years of litigation, we secured key wins in the case, though it ended when Trump left office.
We also obtained documents exposing the true costs of Trump’s corruption and the lengths the Trump Justice Department went to in order to protect him when the Mueller report came out.
CREW has taken action time and time again to hold Trump accountable, and we won’t stop now. Help us continue holding Trump, and every elected official, accountable to the law → [[link removed]]

One of the most significant moments in CREW’s history was January 6th, 2021. We knew after the 2020 election when Trump was pushing his election denial that it wouldn't be an easy few months, but on January 6th, everything changed. Our mission to defend democracy became more important than ever.
President Trump used every resource he had to overthrow our democracy so that he could remain in office. When voters said no, when the courts said no, when even his own vice president said no, he incited his supporters to take violent action against the government to try to stop the peaceful transfer of power that forms the basis of our democracy.
We knew then that we would need to take action to ensure that a similar event would not happen again.
In 2022, we sued to remove Otero County, NM Commissioner Couy Griffin from office and disqualify him from holding future public office under Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, based on his involvement in the insurrection. We won.
It was the first successful use of the Disqualification Clause in court in over 150 years.
This week, we made history again by winning our Colorado lawsuit, preventing Donald Trump from being on the ballot in 2024.
Now we’re in the midst of our biggest fight yet: defending this victory as Trump promises to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court. The continued viability of our republic depends on us at this moment.
The good news is that CREW has had 20 years to prepare for this fight, and we’re no stranger to tough legal battles. Can you make a MATCHED donation today in support of CREW’s work to disqualify Trump from the ballot?
