When Julia decided to leave her abusive family home, she felt she had nowhere to go. And what about her cat, Howie?
In the wake of violence, the lives of survivors and their loved ones can become unpredictable and vulnerable. POV helps survivors and their families secure safety and lasting stability through Housing Assistance.
Though Julia could go to a shelter, most do not accept pets, and with increasing homelessness, many animal shelters are at capacity. Julia’s coworker agreed to care for Howie for the time being, but she needed a long-term solution for them both.
"It was the scariest time of my life. I didn’t know how to even start looking for an affordable apartment, and even then, I barely had enough saved up to move. It felt impossible. Then–thankfully–a friend told me about POV.”
– Julia

POV’s Housing Case Manager got to work for Julia and Howie right away. They located a safe, affordable, cat-friendly apartment close to Julia’s office and liaised with the landlord to allow immediate move-in. They assisted Julia with the rental application, lease agreement, and further applications for partner and government aid. From Peace Over Violence, Julia was given $3,000 in rental aid and a fully covered security deposit.
With POV’s guidance and financial aid, Julia and Howie were able to settle into their new home free from violence.
