Senator Ricketts' Weekly Column:
Merry Christmas, Nebraska!

Christmas is a joyous season. We look forward to the crackle of a warm fire, the glow of festive lights, and the echoes of carols in the air. We observe important traditions of faith, family, and fellowship. We enjoy excellent food and exchange gifts with loved ones. Christmas also allows for time to reflect on the true meaning of the season and the values that define us as a state and nation.

For my family and me, Christmas is about celebrating Jesus Christ, God’s only Son. His birth, marked by humility and grace in a Bethlehem manger, brought hope and healing to our broken world. Jesus taught that it’s “more blessed to give than receive" and that true greatness comes from serving others. “Love one another,” He said. Service is not just a seasonal obligation. It is a year-round commitment to the peace and prosperity of our families, nation, and world. Generations of Americans found strength and motivation in those words. Our nation is strongest when we do the same.

This Christmas, we also remember the many brave Nebraskans who will spend the holidays away from their families. We give thanks for the first responders, law enforcement officials, doctors, and nurses who dedicate their Christmas to keeping us safe and healthy. We particularly thank the women and men serving us in uniform that continue to keep our country safe. It is because of their commitment to duty that we get to enjoy our freedoms. Their sacrifices – and that of their families – do not go unnoticed. We pray for their safe return home.

Additionally, we pray for the safe return of the Americans still being held hostage around the world, especially those held by Hamas in Gaza. We grieve with the families of the 33 Americans killed by Hamas terrorists. We also affirm our commitment to a just and timely end to the wars raging around the world.

As we gather with family and loved ones, let’s remember how incredibly blessed we are. Let’s take time to reach out to neighbors and those around us who need love and assistance. Let’s do our part to give the gift of joy to others this holiday season. When we do these things, we strengthen the bonds that tie us together as a state and as a nation.

I am continually inspired by the countless acts of service undertaken by Nebraskans every day and look forward to what 2024 has in store. As Tiny Tim so rightly prays in Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, “God bless us, every one.” My family and I hope everyone in Nebraska enjoys a safe and happy holiday season. Merry Christmas, Nebraska!
