Earlier this month, House Budget Committee Chair Jodey Arrington held his first hearing on a proposed “fiscal commission,” which seeks to cut trillions of dollars from critical programs and services while raising no new revenue from those who can afford to pay more: millionaires, billionaires, and corporations.

And, in his first remarks as speaker this fall, Mike Johnson singled out the debt commission as a top priority.

Right wing proposals of a closed-door commission are a real threat to the future of Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, and more. And now they’ve floated the idea of demanding their fiscal commission in exchange for keeping the government running next month.

When Congress returns in the New Year, they’ll have less than three weeks to pass a government funding bill, or we’ll face a partial government shutdown.
