Dear Press Freedom Supporter,

Press freedom in the United States is increasingly in peril, and I’m writing to ask for your help.

With police raids on newsrooms like the Marion County Record in Kansas, the arrests of journalists in Alabama, and politicians demanding the DOJ investigate journalists, what the press faces in the U.S. as we move into an election year is bleak.

Promising to serve as a dictator “on day one,” Donald Trump’s repeated anti-press rhetoric should alarm us all.

In a recent conversation between Trump's former political strategist, Steve Bannon, and his former National Security Council adviser, Kash Patel, Patel promised Trump would "come after" the press, following Trump's own words to the press that they would be "thoroughly scrutinized" and "pay a big price."

“Thuggish threats to ‘come after’ members of the media in retaliation for their work covering elections is incredibly concerning, and creates a permission structure for violence against journalists,” CPJ’s U.S. and Canada program coordinator, Katherine Jacobsen, recently told CNN.

CPJ is preparing now for a volatile election year in 2024, engaging with newsrooms and journalists across the U.S., and offering safety workshops, advisories, and one-on-one consultations. We stand ready to support journalists through whatever comes their way.

You, too, can help: a gift to CPJ today can help ensure that, “on day one,” we are ready to support journalists so they can continue to keep us informed.

Press freedom is your freedom.

Best,

John D. Weis
