Dear JOHN,

I hope your holiday season is off to a great start and that you’re able to spend quality time with your loved ones over the coming weeks. It’s hard to believe that it will soon be 2024!  As I reflect on 2023, I want to remind you that House Democrats are committed to delivering for everyday Americans. We have been working to lower costs for child-care, home energy and high-speed internet, grow the middle class and make our communities safer.  My promise to you and your family is that Democrats will always put People over Politics. This year, we crossed the aisle and voted with Republicans to prevent our nation from defaulting on our debt and to stop two costly government shutdowns.

As we look towards 2024, Congress has a lot to accomplish. We need to keep the government open by passing appropriations bills, fund President Biden’s domestic & foreign aid supplemental, consider comprehensive immigration reform, continue to grow the economy among many other priorities. But please know in every instance, Democrats are thinking about how it impacts everyday Americans. We have championed programs, like the Affordable Connectivity Program. According to the White House, this initiative provides low-cost high-speed internet to nearly 70,000 households in NY-5. Democrats have also advocated for funding to support access to childcare services for more than 676,000 kids in New York according to the Biden Administration. Our commitment to people-centric policy is borne out by the programs we support, and I’ll continue to uphold those values

New York’s 5th district is a resilient community that’s vibrant and diverse and I am grateful for the trust that you all have placed in me as your representative. I take great pride in representing my constituents on Capitol Hill.

Happy Holidays!

Community Engagement

Rep. Meeks meets with civic leaders on community priorities.

I hosted a series of meetings across New York's 5th congressional district with civic and community board leaders to address local issues. At the heart of a thriving community are civic meetings where voices are heard and ideas are exchanged.

Transforming JFK Airport

Rep. Meeks attends groundbreaking at JFK Airport's terminal six and tours redevelopment project.

I joined other Southeast Queens elected officials for a tour and briefing of the ongoing progress of JFK Redevelopment Project. Together, we are working to transform JFK into a world-class, state-of-the-art airport. According to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the $3.9 billion investment will create 4,000 jobs and strengthen long-term partnerships with Minority and Women-Owned Businesses.

Snake Road Flood Mitigation

I announced a $3.1 million federal grant provided by FEMA and the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services (DHSES). The grant will support a study examining ways to mitigate flooding along “Snake Road,” a stretch of Brookville Boulevard, between 149th avenue and Rockaway Boulevard prone to flooding. The flood mitigation study will launch next year and will assess long and short-term solution to address flooding while considering regulatory constraints posed by environmental and wetland mitigation requirements and the presence of utilities alongside the road.

Community Project Victories

If you would like to share funding priorities for the next fiscal year's appropriations, contact my office at Meeks.house.gov/contact.

Rep. Meeks held more than a dozen local check presentations in NY-05 this year.

I secured more than $16.3 million for 15 local projects in NY-05. The institutions that received federal funding include Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, St. John’s Episcopal Hospital, York College and more.

Committee on Foreign Affairs

Rep. Meeks, Leader Hakeem Jeffries and members of the Congressional Delegation with Keith Rowley, Prime Minister of Trinidad & Tobago.

I was proud to join a Congressional Delegation led by Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries to Trinidad and Tobago in July during the 50th celebration of CARICOM, an organization of nearly 20 Caribbean countries founded to promote economic growth and trade. The U.S. and Trinidad & Tobago share a great partnership on many vital issues, including energy security and strengthening democracy in the region.
