No matter who the GOP nominates for President — twice-impeached, can-barely-even-count-how-many-times-indicted Donald Trump, or one of his enablers — it’s clear that the Republican party has chosen a path of dangerous extremism and is spreading it up and down the ballot and across the country.
We cannot go down that path with them.
If MAGA Republicans take back more power, they’ll further restrict the right to an abortion nationwide, the freedom to vote, and protections for trans people. They’ll threaten Social Security and Medicare, reward the rich and powerful, and embolden an extremist base across the country.
So I’m fighting to stop the GOP’s dangerous agenda, protect our freedoms, and pass policies that put our government on the side of working families. That means passing national abortion protections. That means strengthening our democracy and protecting voting rights. That means defending LGBTQ+ rights.
But here’s the way I see it: This critical election is not only about fighting back against MAGA extremism. We must also rip out the root causes of the deep problems in our economy, our government, and our democracy. The problems that existed way before Donald Trump rode down that elevator in 2015.
So I'll be direct: We’re up against a lot of problems right now. We not only have to fight back against MAGA extremism — but also against a system that benefits from the status quo and says that big change is “impossible.”
That’s what some told me about my idea of a Consumer Financial Protection Bureau — an agency that has returned more than $16 billion to American consumers who’ve been cheated. I was also told that my plan for student debt cancelation wouldn’t be possible either — but President Biden has still been able to cancel around $127 billion in student debt so far for nearly 3.6 million borrowers.
We can do this. We can beat the extreme MAGA vision of a country that has fewer freedoms, fewer working people able to make ends meet, and fewer voices in our democracy. A movement that wants our country to have more corruption, more extremist laws, and more struggle for working families.
And we can also make sure that our country isn’t only working for people at the top, but for everyone. We can reimagine our tax code, with billionaires and giant corporations paying a fair share. We can pass universal child care. We can reform the Supreme Court. We can end the filibuster.
This remarkable moment in our history is an opportunity for our country to shake off who we were and build something new, but not a guarantee that it will happen. Because you don’t get what you don’t fight for.
I’m in this fight all the way — are you with me?
Thanks for being a part of this,
Elizabeth
