John,

Each month, we bring you an update on Mike’s latest work on the issues that are driving conversations around the globe.

Here’s what’s happened since our last edition.

Bottom Line:“Gen Z’s voice is getting louder. Next year 41 million of its members will be eligible to vote. As we grapple with a war in Ukraine, unrest in the Middle East, and a potential Chinese invasion of Taiwan, Gen Z’s ascendancy will make maintaining public support for a lethal, forward-deployed all-volunteer force more difficult.”

Bottom Line: “America should be a haven from persecution, not a hunting ground for an authoritarian regime. This a global strategy to surveil, harass, and ultimately, export their model of total totalitarian control, not just within the borders of China, but around the world. This should be very concerning for Americans. We need to defend our sovereignty.”

Bottom Line: “The fact that we have a report that has 150 recommendations, that’s a bipartisan report that our committee got behind, I’m not sure that’s ever happened in recent history… Obviously, not everyone is enthusiastic about every single recommendation, but people were willing to come together and make a principled compromise.”

Bottom Line: “While our immigration system faces many challenges, one of the clearest and easiest-to-fix problems is the fact that immigration judges lack contempt authority. This allows individuals going before an immigration court to defy their court date and make a mockery of the immigration court system.”

Bottom Line:“There are concerns over espionage, whether TikTok can track your location, your data — which are important and I think why every major Biden administration national-security official does not use TikTok and has said we need to take action either in the form of a ban or a forced sale.”

Thank you for reading this month’s edition of the Foreign Policy Newsletter –– we’ll be in touch as we monitor developing stories from around the globe.
