News for working people to understand a world in crisis

Anthem protests center stage at NFL team owners meeting

Dear John,

Coronavirus pandemic. A looming global economic recession. The danger of a second Trump term.

Ours is a world of major uncertainty right now. A public health emergency threatens to crash an economy that was already bad for many workers. The administration in the White House appears to be bungling its response. States are scrambling to come up with test kits, insurance companies continue dithering on whether they’ll cover coronavirus-related costs, and all of us left worrying whether we’d be able to take care of ourselves and our families if things get worse.

Are there enough medical supplies, respirators, and hospital beds? Will companies start going bankrupt? How many jobs might be lost? What will the government do for workers with no sick days or those who can’t work from home? Wall Street is in full panic mode, with the worst stock market volatility since the Great Recession. They’re all lobbying Washington for corporate bailouts in the form of tax cuts and plans to prop up stock prices and shrinking margins.

The mainstream media runs one doom-and-gloom story after another in search of higher ratings and clicks, profiting from panic. Meanwhile, the right-wing outlets that back the president, like Fox News, alternate between spreading dangerous conspiracy theories and false reassurances that Trump has everything under control.

Who knows what to believe?

People’s World is committed to being the reliable and trustworthy source for the political, labor, and international news that you need in this moment of crisis. We can’t do it without your generous support. Please donate today!

We’ll keep you updated on what Congress is doing beyond just giving tax cuts to employers. When union nurses fight back to defend themselves and their patients from health threats, you’ll read about it in People’s World. As the Democratic primaries and the fight to unseat Trump carry on toward November, the latest progressive analysis will be in our pages. And when you need a break from the stress and panic of the news cycle, check out the recommendations of our award-winning culture writers.

To meet our commitments and duties to deliver the freshest and most hard-hitting analysis and news, though, we need help. Reaching two million readers a year with People’s World isn’t cheap. Sending reporters out into the field to chronicle people’s struggles and maintaining a modern and high-performing website costs a lot of money.

We hope you’ll be able to help keep People’s World coming out five days a week with whatever donation you can afford. And to really guarantee the newspaper is here for a long time to come, please consider becoming a regular monthly sustainer.

In times of crisis, working people need a voice they can trust. People’s World is that voice.

Thanks for your support,
