Dear John,

As a global organization, we employ people in more than 25 countries around the world. Together, we speak nearly 50 different languages and offer lived perspectives from countless cultural backgrounds and at multiple intersections of identity. Combined with our global community of nearly half a million supporters, our staff form a diverse and united family. As 2023 draws to a close, we asked some of them to reflect on their highlights from the year.

Securing justice for the next generation

At the start of 2023, nearly a decade after Equality Now first became involved in her case, justice was finally delivered for Bolivian rape survivor Brisa De Angulo in a landmark ruling against the government of Bolivia by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR).

This was a significant achievement for Equality Now and everyone else involved in Brisa’s case, for as a regional legal body, the Inter-American Court has the power to not only impact individuals with its rulings, but also to set precedents that have the potential to prevent future miscarriages of justice for thousands of other rape survivors in the Americas and beyond.

Shaping the global conversation

In everything from our submission of crucial evidence to the UN, to our involvement as a founding member of SOAWR during the Maputo Protocol 20th anniversary celebrations, we have continued to shape and inform global conversations around gender equality this year.

We also reached new audiences through our new podcast, We Change the Rules – a six-part audio series hosted by award-winning journalist Samira Ahmed and featuring the voices of a diverse range of activists, academics, and legal experts from across the world.

Coming together as one Equality Now

Throughout the year, we’ve had more opportunities than ever to bring together staff from across our organization – including at the Women Deliver conference in Kigali, at the official launch of the Hurra Coalition in Doha, and at the annual Equality Now Gala in New York.

In everything we do, we know that together, we are stronger.

Our staff form a vital branch of the Equality Now family – and so do you. As one of our loyal supporters, you are part of a global community of nearly half a million people who all believe in the foundational role of gender equality in creating a peaceful and more prosperous world.

As we move into 2024 with renewed energy, our new Global Executive Director, Mona Sinha in her stride, and a bold vision in place for our shared future, we hope you will continue to stand with us.
