Message from the Leader - round-up of the year Christmas is here - a time to come together with friends and family, reflect on the past year and look forward to 2024. And what a year it has been. For me personally, I couldn't have been more proud to have been re-appointed as Leader of Oldham Council in May. Returning to serve the people of my home town is the greatest of honours, and when I look back on the past six months, I'm incredibly proud of what we've already achieved, together. Our new-look town centre is rapidly taking shape, with the revamp of Spindles to create a new market, events space and archives; the unveiling of plans for our new theatre and home for the Oldham Coliseum, the official opening of Hilton Square, a new green public space, and of course the huge announcement of our partnership with Muse, who will be creating 2,000 new homes of all types and sizes in the heart of our town centre. |

Council and local businesses team up to bring Christmas joy to over 500 children across Oldham Oldham Council staff, along with elected members and local businesses, are making this Christmas extra special for more than 500 children in the borough. The response to this year's Christmas Toy Appeal has been described as "phenomenal", with hundreds of vulnerable children set to receive gifts this festive season, many of whom may not have received a present otherwise. One main supporter of this year's campaign has been Oldham Athletic, with masses of generous donations flooding into Boundary Park. Shop director fined after ignoring Natasha’s Law Oldham Council is issuing a warning after the director of a tea shop was fined for continually breaking food Labelling laws. In October 2021 Natasha’s Law was introduced to protect the millions of allergen sufferers across the country.Since then, all food businesses must include the full ingredients on the label of any food they are selling over the counter. The law was introduced following the tragic death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse. The teenager died after suffering an allergic reaction to a Pret a Manger baguette that contained sesame seeds that she was allergic to. There was no allergen information on the label. Unfortunately, some businesses continue to flout the law – including Uncles Tea Hut, Manchester Street, Oldham. On a visit to the Manchester Street shop Food Hygiene officers noticed that packaged cakes were being sold that did not have any labelling on them. Staff were advised of the law and a legal notice was served on the premises. However, during a follow up visit more unlabelled cakes were discovered. Legal proceedings were launched, and the shop’s director pleaded guilty to breaking the Food Information Law at Tameside Magistrates on December 4. Muzafar Iqbal, of Highfield Drive, Oldham was ordered to pay £2,088 in fines, a victim surcharge and costs. |

Changes to Christmas bin collections
Please be aware that there will be changes to our waste and recycling rounds due on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Alternative collections are as follows:
- Bins due on Monday 25 December will be collected on Saturday 30 December instead, including green bins and food caddies.
- Bins due on Tuesday 26 December will be collected earlier on Saturday 23 December instead, including green bins and food caddies.
- Bins due on Monday 1 January will be collected on Saturday 6 January - apart from green bins and food caddies which will be collected on Monday 8 January as normal.
