John, I know my colleagues recently mentioned our shortfall this year. We are 274 donations closer to our target but still 825 short. As part of the Oceans campaign team, I can tell you firsthand how regular, reliable support is essential to us winning campaigns.

Just this year we secured the biggest conservation victory ever. The Global Oceans Treaty was a historic win, which will create a network of fully protected ocean sanctuaries across the globe for the first time.

This wouldn’t be possible without people like you. It takes a people-powered movement to make change. When we band together and make our voices heard, we can force those in charge to listen.

But the fight isn’t over. We need the treaty written into law to protect our oceans. This is why we need you John. We have a huge opportunity here. We’ve already taken a huge step forward, but we can’t lose momentum.

Our Oceans are incredible. Half the oxygen we breathe is thanks to the oceans. They regulate our climate and most importantly capture our carbon. They provide food and livelihoods to more than three billion people across the globe [1]. Every single one of us depends on them – even if we don’t realise it.

But these vital ecosystems are being destroyed. Scientists say that we need to protect at least 30% of the world’s oceans by 2030, as a bare minimum. If we don’t, our oceans won’t be able to properly recover from the damage that’s already been done.

If we want to meet the 2030 deadline, we need to act fast. We need at least 60 governments to sign the Global Ocean Treaty into law by 2025. This is a critical moment for the future of our oceans and we cannot afford to stay silent.

And while governments delay, destructive industries continue to harm the oceans – impacting the billions of people who rely on the oceans and deepening the climate crisis.

The UK has already said they support the 30x30 target. Now they must put their words into action and commit to doing everything in their power to ensure the Treaty is implemented.
