As the exclusive People magazine report describes it: “It's a miracle — and it all started with a joke.”

Jennifer Flewellen, from Niles, Michigan, lay unresponsive in a hospital bed in 2022, after a nearly five-year coma resulting from a car crash, when her mother Peggy Means decided to tell her a joke. Then the totally unexpected happened: Flewellen, 41, started laughing.

Means says she was scared at first but when the realisation struck over what just happened “every dream came true” as the door that was closed, that kept us apart, had just opened. We were back.”

The “miracle” happened in August 2022 and it was the first breakthrough in a long battle for Flewellen, who is now progressing in regaining her speech and mobility.

It’s a cautionary reminder never to give up hope and to reflect on the huge powers that are being transferred in some countries to members of the medical profession and others to determine who lives and who dies when an individual’s quality of life is subjectively deemed to be incompatible with staying alive, after they become incapacitated or suffer a potentially life shortening illness.

A Belfast-based consultant obstetrician/gynaecologist and co-chairperson of Doctors for Choice, Laura McLaughlin, took to X in recent days to announce that she was “very proud” that Northern Ireland had “made history” with the first legal abortion on 13th December of a baby in the second trimester of pregnancy.

Dr McLaughlin, who is also a member of the Northern Ireland Abortion and Contraception Taskgroup, has appeared in the media on numerous occasions as an abortion activist north of the border. Since February 2023, she has been the Clinical Lead in Northern Ireland for Abortion ‘Care’ in the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust.

Whilst her prepared media statements are usually framed as merely about giving women “choice”, her most recent post on X was particularly unsavoury. Her celebratory tone and self-described “pride” in announcing a late-term abortion left many readers on X uncomfortable and disgusted at what she wrote. The backlash, including from people who voted Yes in 2018 led to her making her X account private.

Her attitude though is reflective of a tendency among abortion advocates to regard abortion - the intentional ending of a human life - as somehow something to be celebrated. Recently another Irish abortion advocate said that for GPs the act of aborting babies is “one of the most enjoyable parts of what they do.”

Sometimes these slips of honesty provide a window into the disturbing motivations and attitudes of abortion campaigners.

It’s a really important time to approach your local TDs and Senators and urge them to reintroduce some humanity into the debate on abortion. The Three-Year Review, a seriously flawed process which produced a one-sided and extreme report, will be considered by politicians in the autumn. It’s important that we take action now.

We have produced a quick and easy Virtual Postcard for you to sign, which will automatically send an email to your local TDs. Use the button below to navigate into your county on our website and find your constituency.

It’s also important to have meetings with your TDs. These can be as simple as dropping into your local TD’s advice clinic to outline your concerns. Click below to register to lobby your local TDs. Don’t worry – we’ll help you every step of the way with advice on making the appointment to points you might consider raising.

We are heartened by the number of people actively involved and interested in meeting their politicians to express their views. The People Before Profit Bill which regrettably passed at 2nd stage of the Dáil on 31st May must also be countered. Even the Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, has said this Bill goes far beyond the recommendations of the Three-Year Review – which are already extreme in their own right.

It is crucial to engage with our politicians and remind them not to overlook the referendum promises. We need to fight to ensure our abortion policy is aimed at reducing the abortion rate.

A comprehensive history of the pro-life movement is yet to be written, but the historians of the future will need primary sources.
