John – my name is Whitney Shanahan. I’m a proud mother, a passionate abortion rights advocate, and a progressive Democrat. I’m launching my run against GOP Congressman Darrell Issa in California’s 48th District. In 2019, in Ohio where I was born and raised, Republicans in our state legislature launched an all-out assault on reproductive rights by trying to pass a 6-week abortion ban. At the time, I was pregnant and furious that a group of mostly men were attempting to control and govern my body.
I knew I had to fight back. So I took to the steps of the Statehouse with a group of resilient women and led protests to protect abortion rights all across Ohio and nationwide.

Within months, we had thousands of members and formed Pro Choice with Heart, a citizen-led initiative to show up and stand up for reproductive rights. And although this bill unfortunately ended up passing, we in turn created a network of hundreds of thousands of advocates that continually and consistently show up and fight for our right to an abortion, no matter the circumstances.
Today, living in San Diego County with my husband and 4 year-old son, I am at a similar crossroads to where I was in 2019. I am represented by one of the most far-right Congressmen in the country, Darrell Issa.
A career politician and one of the richest men in the House of Representatives, Congressman Issa believes it’s his right to govern other people’s bodies. He’s worked to defund vital resources like Planned Parenthood, celebrated the overturning of Roe v. Wade, and has been complicit in attempts by his colleagues to issue a nationwide abortion ban.
I’m fighting back by running against him and his barbaric beliefs. I’m running to represent the voices of thousands across this district, and millions across the country that believe abortion rights are human rights.
With the recent victory in Ohio, where voters stood up and demanded reproductive rights be added to their states constitution, it has shown us that now more than ever, people are motivated to fight for our right to an abortion. It’s important we realize in this race here in San Diego County, abortion is on the ballot. And that’s why I’m stepping up to face Congressman Issa, but I need your help, John.
