Daily Docket — Thursday, Dec. 21

Here are some recent updates.

  • The U.S. Department of Justice submitted a brief defending Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act in a lawsuit challenging Louisiana's legislative districts. GOP state officials are alleging that the statute violates the U.S. Constitution. Learn more about the case here.

  • Tom Crosby and Peggy Judd — supervisors of Cochise County, Arizona — pleaded not guilty to felony charges of interference with an election officer and conspiracy after refusing to certify the county's election results in 2022.

  • Special Counsel Jack Smith's cert petition — asking the U.S. Supreme Court to decide whether former President Donald Trump has presidential immunity from prosecution related to Jan. 6 — is fully briefed. Now the Supreme Court will decide whether they'll take the case.

    • Among the briefs is an amicus brief from 19 Republican attorneys general in support of Trump who say that the Court should not expedite consideration of this case.

Here’s what’s coming up.

  • The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals denied North Dakota lawmakers' request to extend the deadline to redraw legislative districts to February. Tomorrow’s Dec. 22 deadline remains in effect.

    • Lawmakers adjourned yesterday without selecting a new map, making it unlikely for them to meet the deadline.

  • Trump has until Jan. 4, 2024 to appeal the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision kicking him off the primary ballot to the U.S. Supreme Court.

    • You can stay up to date on the case here.
