As we approach the end of 2023 and reflect back on all we’ve worked to achieve in the past year, we wanted to share our Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All Year In Review!
This is a long, but important email featuring highlights in our campaign to pass guaranteed health care for all in California and the United States at large.
We kicked off 2023 with our January 31st Medicare for All National Strategy Call, bringing together 400 nurses and community members from across the country, laying out our organizing plans for the year, and setting a goal of hitting 100 Patients Over Profits pledge signers by May Day (May 1st).
On February 17th, our CalCare spot bill, AB 1690, was introduced into the California State Assembly by Asm. Ash Kalra. Later that month, we published our 5-part organizing plan for CalCare in 2023, setting 5 priorities for the year that included: organizing our biggest field program ever, broadening and deepening our coalition, building support in the labor movement, public education, and organizing inside the legislature. One month later, we held a CalCare Statewide Weekend of Action with over 50 canvass events across California to build public support.
On April 20th, we hit 100 Patients Over Profits pledge signers — 11 days ahead of our goal!
On May 17th, Senator Bernie Sanders, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, and Congresswoman Debbie Dingell reintroduced Medicare for All in the U.S. House and Senate along with 112 House cosponsors and 14 Senate cosponsors. Our own Deborah Burger, RN and President of NNU, spoke at the press conference reintroducing the bill. And the night beforehand, our own Nancy Hagans, RN and President of NYSNA and NNU, spoke at a live streamed Medicare for All Town Hall in Washington, D.C. hosted by the bill authors to facilitate more national conversation around this crucial topic.
Days later, we hosted a National Medicare for All Weekend of Action with events taking place in states including New York, Ohio, North Carolina, Washington, California, Hawaii, and more.
Over the summer, volunteers in California hosted more than 100 separate canvass events in support of CalCare. Then, on July 19th, we kicked off our series of CalCare Town Halls, starting in San Jose and continuing in Santa Rosa, Los Angeles, and Oakland from July through September.
On July 27th we held a nationwide Patients Over Profits Strategy Call with hundreds of supporters celebrating the 100 signers milestone and kicking off the next phase of the campaign, including the creation of three special volunteer teams. We were joined by featured speaker and pledge signer Florida State Rep. Anna V. Eskamani.
On August 16th, we launched our first nationwide Medicare for All Movement Call, a new series of quarterly calls for Medicare for All supporters across the country, and were joined by Medicare for All Florida to hear about the great work they are doing in the Sunshine State.
In late August, we held our first Patients Over Profits monthly volunteer Update Call. These continued through the end of the year with hundreds of volunteers in total from across the country joining to help get more signers on the pledge, which now has 135 signers!
On September 23rd, we held a Statewide CalCare Day of Action with events in cities including Oakland, Los Angeles, Modesto, San Diego, and more. Hundreds of activists in total showed up to rally for CalCare.
And last but not least, on December 6th we held our final Medicare for All Movement Call of the year with over 200 people across the country. We paid tribute to our friend Ady Barkan and looked forward to Medicare for All organizing in 2024.
That was just a fraction of the organizing that we did together in 2023. And it was all thanks to the hard work and dedication of nurses, organizers, and supporters like you!
With 2023 soon coming to a close, our team is eagerly looking forward to continuing our work to pass CalCare and Medicare for All with you in 2024!
Thank you again for your unwavering support and contributions to our movement.
In solidarity,
Nurses' Campaign to Win Medicare for All
