A Systematic Review of COVID-19 Misinformation Interventions
In the December issue of Health Affairs, Rory Smith and his colleagues at Brown University conduct a systematic review of studies examining COVID-19 misinformation interventions ([link removed] ) employed by governments and other entities during the pandemic.
After identifying sixty-five different outcome measures across fifty papers on COVID-19 misinformation interventions, they classify 119 interventions into twelve types.
Ultimately, the researchers find various limitations in the findings related to these interventions, noting, for example, that only 18 percent of interventions included public health–related measures, and that there was a lack of consistency in outcome measures.
They determine that there is no “silver bullet” for mitigating misinformation, and that the development of a health misinformation typology is needed to more clearly discern the effects of various mitigation designs.
