Reps. Adriano Espaillat and Jenniffer González-Colón Introduce the Roberto Clemente Coin Act

WASHINGTON, DC -- This week, Representatives Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) and Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR) introduced the bipartisan Roberto Clemente Commemorative Coin Act to honor the profound legacy of Major League Baseball (MLB) star Roberto Clemente and his humanitarian achievements for Black and Latino communities around the nation.

“Roberto Clemente was the model player, social advocate, a champion of civil rights, and a star among his peers,” said Rep. Espaillat. “As a player, Clemente was unrivaled in right field and no name in history commands more respect than his in Latin American baseball circles. I am proud to introduce bipartisan legislation to recognize Roberto Clemente’s humanitarian efforts, baseball stardom, and unapologetic pride in Latino heritage with the production of a commemorative coin honoring his legacy and the impact he had throughout the MLB, during the civil rights movement, and around the nation.”

As a social justice trailblazer and tireless advocate for the rights of minority communities, Roberto Clemente’s legacy extends beyond the baseball field. The introduction of the Roberto Clemente Commemorative Coin Act serves as a lasting tribute to his sportsmanship, talent, and humanitarian efforts both on and off the field.

Earlier this Congress, Espaillat introduced a congressional resolution urging the MLB to fully implement Roberto Clemente Day throughout the league.

Representative Espaillat is the first Dominican American to serve in the U.S. House of Representatives and his congressional district includes Harlem, East Harlem, West Harlem, Hamilton Heights, Washington Heights, Inwood, Marble Hill and the north-west Bronx. First elected to Congress in 2016, Representative Espaillat is serving his fourth term in Congress. Representative Espaillat currently serves as a member of the influential U.S. House Committee on Appropriations responsible for funding the federal government’s vital activities and serves as Ranking Member of the Legislative Branch Subcommittee of the committee during the 118th Congress. WASHINGTON, DC – Esta semana, los congresistas Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) y Jenniffer González-Colón (R-PR) introdujeron de manera bipartidista la Ley de la Moneda Conmemorativa Roberto Clemente para honrar el profundo legado de la estrella de las Grandes Ligas de Béisbol (MLB) Roberto Clemente y sus logros humanitarios para los negros y comunidades latinas en toda la nación.

“Roberto Clemente fue un jugador modelo, un defensor social, un luchador por los derechos civiles y una estrella entre sus pares”, dijo el Rep. Espaillat. “Como jugador, Clemente no tenía rival en el jardín derecho y ningún nombre en la historia inspira más respeto que el suyo en los círculos del béisbol latinoamericano. Estoy orgulloso de introducir una pieza legislativa bipartidista para reconocer los esfuerzos humanitarios, el estrellato en el béisbol y el tremendo orgullo por la herencia latina de Roberto Clemente con la producción de una moneda conmemorativa en honor a su legado y el impacto que tuvo en toda la MLB, durante el movimiento de derechos civiles y alrededor de la nación."
