We’re in the midst of a public health crisis, Friend.

Serving as mayor of Holyoke, I’ve had to make several difficult decisions in the last decade to ensure the safety and prosperity of our city. However, this pandemic has raised the bar. We need to act quickly and decisively in order to mitigate the fallout of this public health emergency.

Yesterday, I called on Governor Baker to order the closure of all schools, daycares, sit down restaurants, bars, and other non-essential establishments because voluntary social distancing is simply not enough. And us local mayors cannot confront this pandemic alone. Our state and federal governments’ responses must be in solidarity.

I am encouraged to report that hours after my call for Governor Baker to make these swift steps toward addressing this pandemic, he banned gatherings of more than 25 people, ordered schools closed and reduced restaurants and bars to takeout and delivery only.

It is essential that we care for one another in this trying time. First responders, grocery workers, and service-industry workers will be particularly impacted by rise in demand in their workplaces. We need to support one another, and that’s why I am now calling on the Senate to pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

The House passed the bill early Saturday morning, and the Senate has sat on it since then. Sign this petition calling the Senate to immediately schedule a vote to pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act.

This bill will ensure that all coronavirus testing is free for everyone, including the uninsured, and ensure paid sick leave for workers. This bill is an important first step to guaranteeing protections for the most vulnerable in our workforce, and we can work toward guaranteeing additional protections once we get this first measure passed.

I recognize the severe financial impact closures will have on local businesses, residents, and you and your families. But we must do everything in our power to keep people safe. Our communities are stronger when we lead together. And leadership right now means making these difficult decisions that will disrupt our lives in the short-term, but ensure that our future is not marred by inaction in this moment of crisis.

Our Senators have the power to ease the financial burden on you and your communities, but Republicans continue to play politics with our lives.

Local governments like the City of Holyoke and our state government are working around the clock to mitigate the impact of the coronavirus crisis in our communities, but we need the power of the federal government to ensure that we’re all taken care of. Tell Senate Republicans to pass the Families First Coronavirus Response Act now.

I will continue to keep you updated on developments from our local and state decision-makers.

Together we will make it through this crisis.
