Lanes opening where possible for holiday travel

Non-emergency closures suspended; motorists should still expect work zones

SPRINGFIELD – The Illinois Department of Transportation announced today that lanes that have been closed for construction will reopen, where possible, for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays to minimize travel disruption.

Non-emergency closures will be suspended from 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22, to 11:59 p.m. Monday, Dec. 25, as well as from 3 p.m. Friday, Dec. 29, to 11:59 p.m. Jan. 1.

The following lane closures will remain in place during the holiday weekend. Motorists can expect delays and should allow extra time for trips through these areas. Drivers are urged to pay close attention to changed conditions and signs in the work zones, obey the posted speed limits, refrain from using mobile devices and stay alert for workers and equipment. At all times, please buckle and drive sober.

Over the next six years, as part of Gov. Pritzker’s Rebuild Illinois capital program, IDOT aims to invest $41 billion in the state’s transportation network, with $27.03 billion for roads and bridges and $4.6 billion identified for the current fiscal year. A total of $13.96 billion is programmed for other modes, which includes $9.85 billion for transit, $2.67 billion for freight and passenger rail, $1.25 billion for aviation and $190 million for ports and waterways. Projects are spread out across state and local transportation systems, touching each of the 102 counties in Illinois.

On the highways side, the program aims to improve 3,006 miles of roads and just over 9.8 million square feet of bridge deck on the state system, with anticipated funding maintaining 738 miles of roads and 1.1 million square feet of bridge deck for infrastructure overseen by local governments.

Accomplishments through Year Four of Rebuild Illinois included approximately $12.1 billion of improvements statewide on 5,339 miles of highway, 533 bridges, and 762 additional safety improvements.
