Friend,
The stakes in the 2024 presidential election are nothing less than the survival of democracy. But you would hardly know that by reading the headlines in much of the for-profit, corporate press.
Last week, the New York Times reporting about Trump's recent speeches in which he called his political opponents "vermin" and pledged to be a dictator on "day one" was given this unbelievably tepid headline:
Trump Mixes Grievance Politics With Bread-and-Butter G.O.P. Issues
A recent Times story about Trump's plans to fill his second administration with lawyers who are willing to help him dismantle the U.S. Constitution got this soothingly bland headline:
Trump’s Allies Want New Style of Lawyer if He Returns
Are you kidding me?! Trump is openly telling the nation he would terminate the Constitution and make himself a dictator. The corporate media is again bending over backward to make him seem like a normal, ho-hum politician.
We don’t play footsie with fascism here at Common Dreams, and we don’t take a dime of corporate advertising that considers Trump’s continued political survival a cash cow. However, to continue our watchdog journalism and remain strong in the crucial year ahead, we have no choice but to raise every cent of our year-end $100,000 goal.
Please help us get there by making a tax-deductible gift to Common Dreams today. Our independent journalism has never been more critical, with the stakes this high.
