Higher education's watershed moment

Dear John,

As antisemitism grows on U.S. campuses, many alumni and donors are reconsidering their philanthropic contributions. Individuals across income levels, including major donors to institutions like the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard, are withdrawing from longstanding commitments, seeking involvement in a new movement to revive American higher education.

A crucial aspect of this recovery involves cultivating academic entrepreneurs committed to the American Political Tradition—our shared history, founding documents, and values. These individuals, ready for pivotal teaching and leadership roles from community colleges to elite universities, play a vital role in shaping the future of academia. Recognizing that "Personnel is policy," we must prioritize the preparation and advancement of talented educators who align with the principles of a free society.

This vital cause, led by the Jack Miller Center through the American Political Tradition Project, aims to build a talent pipeline for college educators dedicated to the American Political Tradition. With over 1,000 professors on 330 campuses, we're urgently seeking to expand this impactful network, including those positioned for key administrative roles.

As we move into 2024, five things need to happen at scale:
1. Identify and recruit world-class scholars who are prepared to take critical positions in political science, history, law, and related fields
2. Hold “boot camps” and other professional training for leaders and faculty who are going to work in innovative new Schools of Civic Thought ([link removed]) that are starting up at major public universities
3. Multiply the number of campus events with speakers focused on the U.S. Constitution
4. Organize an ambitious set of programs for university-based Constitutional experts to train K-12 social studies teachers how to teach our founding documents
5. Put career advancement opportunities for junior faculty on steroids as they pursue tenured status in their institutions

That is why we are launching an ambitious $17 million campaign to grow the American Political Tradition Project, and we are asking for your help. There are three ways you can get involved at this stage:
1. Help to connect us with one or two friends who may be looking for ways to invest more strategically in higher education.
2. Provide financial support ([link removed]) , which will allow us to make strategic investments in this movement of academic entrepreneurs who value America’s founding principles.
3. Connect us with a university professor or graduate student who may be interested in joining the American Political Tradition Project.

Thank you. This work is urgent and we are grateful for your partnership, ideas, and support. You can reach my cell phone at 253-905-8160 or by email at [email protected] (mailto:[email protected]) .
