,

As the year draws to a close, we extend our heartfelt thanks to every person who has supported the fight to end malaria. Your dedication, alongside that of the global malaria community, in ending this deadly disease, brings us a step closer to a world free of malaria. Here are just some of the ways your support has made an impact…

World Malaria Day and a year of action in Kenya

World Malaria Day in April was the first of a series of high profile moments to shine a spotlight on the opportunity to reach a zero malaria Kenya. We and our partners produced an amazing awareness campaign that featured in media and radio, reaching an audience of 17 million.

We supported the Kenya Malaria Youth Corps as they delivered community action on a tour through three Kenyan counties. Another highlight was Kenya’s Devolution conference in August, where we made sure malaria stayed high on the agenda for county governments responsible for health budgets.

Calling on UK politicians to Finish the Job

UK led science and innovation can help put malaria into the history books. Our advocacy and campaigns have highlighted this opportunity in 2023 as we worked to keep ending malaria on the political and news agenda in the UK.

For World Malaria Day, legendary fashion and culture photographer Rankin snapped rising young scientists who are helping to beat this deadly disease, sparking media coverage, and our scientists attended a parliamentary reception to share their vital work with policy and political decisionmakers.

In October, we called on politicians to do the right thing – to back ending malaria, to Finish The Job in order to save millions of lives. Our campaign film showcased how the fight to end malaria is something for Britain to be proud of, and saw comedian Jolyon Rubenstein asking the provocative question: “can we be bothered to end malaria?”.

We’ve been encouraged to see strong indications of continued UK support, including the Shadow Minister for International Development Lisa Nandy talking about the contribution of British science in the malaria fight on the main stage at the Labour Party Conference, as well as multiple mentions of malaria in Parliament prompted by our work. The fight to end malaria - and specifically Malaria No More UK’s efforts - were also recognised in the government’s International Development White Paper.

Zero Malaria: Change the Story at COP28

This month, the powerful Change the Story film launched the new campaign from Zero Malaria, telling the emotional story of how climate change is making malaria harder to predict and control and the impact this is having on children around the world. The film has reached millions of people all over the world.

Your commitment to the malaria fight brought this message to COP28 – where the UN Climate Conference had its first-ever Health Day - and the Reaching The Last Mile Forum. We reached and engaged influential voices, with the newest Zero Malaria ambassador Ellyanne Wanjiku Chlystun talking climate and malaria with the UK’s Foreign Secretary David Cameron and with King Charles.

We’ve kicked off a massive global push, with campaign ads running in 10 countries across four continents, in five languages, calling on leaders to listen to the voices that can go most unheard.

At the same time, the report recognises the incredible number of lives saved and the importance of supporting malaria programmes to be resilient in the face of rising threats.
