Dear Friends and Neighbors, During the 2023 legislative session, the Democrat majority approved a commission to replace the state flag and seal due to the supposed "racism" displayed in our historic emblems. The allegation of racism stems from the mere depiction of Native Americans, a complaint that caused Democrats to attack high school sports teams as well, including the Warroad Warriors, the name carried by Warroad's legendary hockey team, a name requested by local tribal leaders in their honor. The commission has recently completed their work of replacing Minnesota's flag and seal. The final design images can be viewed below. | Regardless of whether you found the previous flag and seal visually appealing, the reason and process of replacing our historic symbols is purely partisan and ideologically motivated. | Left-wing activists took issue with a final submission on the state seal for including reference to the year 1858, the year Minnesota became a state. The activists on the commission do not view our state's founding as something to be proud of, but rather as something to be ashamed of. The reference to the year 1858 was objected to due to “ties to land cessation treaties.” In the words of one commission member, the year 1858 “is not a date we are celebrating; it’s not something to honor” and that Minnesota's statehood is "not joyous. It’s a reality, it’s something we [as Dakota people] have learned how to navigate.” The state's motto L'etoile du Nord, a French phrase meaning "The Star of the North" selected by Minnesota's first Governor Henry Hastings Sibley, was also removed from the seal and replaced with the native Dakota phrase "Mni Sota Makoce" meaning “Land where the waters reflect the sky.” The same commission member who expressed her disdain for Minnesota existing added that our French motto is a “colonial term that is not ours.” Democrats are erasing our history, and any sense of pride we have in our state in the name of inclusion. Governor Walz and Democrat legislators are allowing people who wish our state never existed to define Minnesota. The divisive race politics Democrats are engaged in is far from the "One Minnesota" Governor Walz campaigned for. At the same time, nobody alive today was a slave or slave owner in the United States. Tax dollars should not be taken from those never engaged in slavery and paid to those who were never slaves. Nevertheless, in April 2022, Democrat run Saint Paul began the formal process seeking to fund reparations using taxpayer dollars and this week the State of New York advanced a similar measure. I anticipate the Democrats may use their 1-vote majority in Minnesota to potentially advance something like this in 2024. | Government programs created by Democrats never, ever, EVER cost what Democrats advertise. Socialist programs such as this are designed to advance dependency on government and ALWAYS cost more than advertised. The picture of Gov. Walz dismissively laughing perfectly captures the Democrat response to truth.
