Dear John,
During these extraordinarily challenging times, donations from supporters like you have enabled PRH to provide education and training to physicians from across the country.
As 2023 ends, we wanted to share some of our top highlights from the past year as a reminder of what work lies ahead in 2024, but also as a resounding thank you for your commitment to the work. None of this is possible without our collective belief that all people should be free to make their own decisions about their bodies, families, and futures.
Federal Advocacy Achievements: - PRH submitted amicus briefs in the Fifth Circuit and Supreme Court in the Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine v. FDA cases to protect access to medication abortion care nationwide.
-
In April, PRH fellow Dr. Nisha Verma testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee in a hearing entitled “The Assault on Reproductive Rights in a Post-Dobbs America,” and PRH’s outgoing Board Chair and Fellow Dr. Kristyn Brandi testified at a shadow hearing hosted by the House Democratic Women’s Caucus and House Pro-Choice Caucus.
-
The FDA approved the first-ever over-the-counter birth control pill in July following the testimony of PRH President & CEO Dr. Jamila Perritt, multiple PRH Fellows, and many others.
-
PRH Director of Public Policy, MiQuel Davies, facilitated the rewrite and introduction of a Congressional resolution opposing the criminalization of essential health care. The resolution was endorsed by over 70 organizations and PRH led a small campaign to lift the introduction of the resolution.
State Advocacy Achievements: - PRH Policy team continues to provide significant support for state coalition partners in our priority target regions, including sharing our Advocacy 101 training.
-
In January, PRH prepared for the major legal case impacting access to medication abortion by updating talking points, preparing rapid response statements and media plans, and served as a leader in coalition spaces. In February, PRH held a reporter roundtable about the case to engage, inform, and mobilize those who write about reproductive health.
-
In February, PRH and State Innovation Exchange (SiX) partnered on three state convenings (in CO, FL, and NC) aimed at building relationships between physicians and legislators in those states, and to support legislators in being prepared to speak on relevant issues, with messaging from physicians, going into committees and floor debates.
-
PRH Assistant Director of State Policy, Adrienne Ramcharan, worked with advocates in Florida to create a provider sign-on letter urging Governor DeSantis to veto a six-week abortion ban. While the law was signed, the letter garnered over 500 signers.
While we cannot predict what the future of reproductive health care will be in this country, we are confident that the voices of physician advocates will continue to play an ever-more critical role in advancing reproductive health, rights, and justice, particularly at the state level.
Our physicians will continue serving as grounding and motivating voices for care and change as we navigate the current crisis and highlight the intersections in which we all live and how those core elements of our identity impact our collective ability to access equitable and just reproductive health care.
We hope you will join us in 2024 as an important ally as we fight together for every person’s ability to control their reproductive future. |
