MEDIA ADVISORY AND PRESS RELEASE
Congressman Al Green Unites with Mayor, Other Congress Persons, and U.S. Senators to Deliver $15 Million in Federal Funding to the City of Houston for New Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Building at William P. Hobby Airport
(Houston, TX) — On Thursday, December 21, 2023, Congressman Al Green and other public officials will present a symbolic check for $15,000,000 in federal funding to the City of Houston. These funds will benefit the construction of a new Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) building at William P. Hobby Airport.
This funding of $15 million in the form of an infrastructure grant awarded to the City of Houston will help establish a 20,116-square-foot new fire station building in compliance with aviation regulations. Houston Fire Station 81 responds to emergency calls at Hobby Airport and has a general response time of 2 minutes to approximately 150 medical calls and 30 aircraft calls a month. The new facility will help the station enhance emergency response capabilities.
Congressman Al Green stated, “This federal funding is a part of President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law that invests $66.2 billion in airports across 23 states including Texas. This much-needed funding will address the ongoing decades of building deterioration resulting in part from natural disasters in Houston which have adversely affected the functionality of the old fire station. The building's age and environmental conditions contributed to significant mold, causing the building to no longer be inhabitable. This in turn led firefighters to relocate their offices and living quarters to temporary trailers in December 2020, where they still reside. These funds will establish critical lifesaving infrastructure for our first responders by improving their living accommodations and operational requirements as they respond to emergencies at the airport.”
