Urban is working to defend against irresponsible AI, with cutting-edge new research across each of our policy centers designed to foster ethical and just AI standards and approaches to achieve more equitable outcomes for people and communities.


What does this look like in practice? Urban’s Health Policy team is analyzing risk assessment scores for pregnant people—which are calculated by managed-care organizations’ AI systems—to determine racial bias. Our Housing Finance Policy team is examining the underlying algorithms for AI tenant screening tools, which can prevent qualified tenants, especially Black and Latinx people, from securing quality rental housing.
