[ [link removed] ]Adam Schiff for Senate
Hi John — My
name is Ed Schiff, but you can call me Boca Eddie (because I live in sunny
Boca Raton, FL now). I’m almost 96.
I’m the proud father of two sons, Dan, the oldest, and Adam, who is
running for the U.S. Senate. I hope you’ll let me take a moment to share a
few thoughts about his campaign.
But first, let me introduce myself. I am originally from Boston, and left
high school early to join the Army at the end of World War II. When I got
out of the service, I went to the University of Alabama on the GI bill,
but left early to get started in business. I married a wonderful woman
named Sherry, got a job as a traveling salesman in the schmata (clothing)
business, and that job enabled our family to buy our first home.
We moved around — from Massachusetts to Arizona — and eventually settled
in Alamo/Danville, in the Bay Area, while Adam was in grade school. I got
out of the schmata business and purchased a small lumber yard, where Dan
and Adam worked during the summer. We became members of a reform synagogue
called Temple Isaiah in Lafayette and put down our roots.
While Dan and Adam were growing up, Sherry and I always wanted them to be
curious boys. To ask lots of questions, to listen and learn about history,
civics, politics, and culture. It was also important to us that our boys
were service-oriented, generous, and compassionate — willing to lend a
helpful hand to a stranger, and work toward a shared belief that a better
world is possible.

We always made sure that growing up our boys paid attention in school and
took their studies seriously. I frequently told Adam that even when they
take everything away from you, they can’t take your education away.
Sherry is gone now, and I miss her. I’m also incredibly proud of the men
that my sons have become. Dan is a talented writer and businessman. And
Adam began his work as a federal prosecutor going after companies for
polluting our environment, then served in the legislature before going to
Congress to fight for more affordable health care.
In his public service career, Adam has gone above and beyond to make a
difference — a real difference — in people’s lives. To ease burdens and
make their lives just a little bit better.
I am particularly proud of what Adam has done to stand up to bullies like
Donald Trump. I would tell you what I think of Trump, but that would
involve a number of words not appropriate for this email. (Although I can
tell you, my bubbie would have called him a schmuck.)
It hasn’t been easy to watch the attacks leveled against Adam, or to hear
about the threats to his life and to his beautiful family. These attacks
have not relented. They come from all directions. From Trump himself, his
allies in the media, his cronies in Congress. And I always tell Adam —
don’t let the bastards get you down.
And he hasn’t. Adam rises above — because he believes in our democracy and
in our ability to make a difference.
That’s why he’s running for the United States Senate. So he can keep up
the fight for working families, for his children and my grandchildren, for
us all.
[ [link removed] ]Now that you’ve learned more about Adam’s upbringing and what motivates
him, I hope you will chip in to his campaign for Senate today. I’m proud
of Adam, and I know he will be an incredible U.S. Senator. You will be
proud of him too.
