Here are some recent updates.
* The Colorado Supreme Court removed ([link removed]) former President Donald Trump from the state's presidential primary ballot, ruling that his involvement in Jan. 6 disqualifies him from holding office again under the 14th Amendment. The case is expected to go to the U.S. Supreme Court.
* The ACLU, on behalf of the League of Women Voters Ohio and a voter, filed ([link removed]) a lawsuit challenging Ohio voter suppression law House Bill 458. The groups allege that the law's limits on ballot assistance violate the Americans with Disabilities Act, Voting Rights Act and U.S. Constitution.
* A lawsuit ([link removed]) arguing that the commissioner districts of Jefferson County, Alabama are racially gerrymandered to "crack" and "pack" Black voters will move forward. A federal judge rejected a request from local officials to dismiss the case.
* A federal court in Georgia held a hearing over challenges ([link removed]) to the state's redrawn legislative and congressional maps. Voters argue that the new maps still violate Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act.
+ Georgia's newly enacted maps contain ([link removed]) additional majority-Black districts as ordered but dismantle existing minority opportunity districts. Voters who challenged the original maps objected to the new maps arguing the districts do not remedy the violation the court found.
* New York's Independent Redistricting Commission will meet on Dec. 28, 2023 to begin the process of redrawing congressional districts. Last week, New York's highest court ordered ([link removed]) the commission to reconvene and draw a new map by Feb. 28, 2024.
