2023 continued to bring more severe weather events with disproportionate impacts on frontline communities in the Global South – severe flooding, hurricanes, wildfires, landslides, heat waves, and more. While corporations and those in power use the climate crisis as an opportunity to impose techo-fixes such as carbon capture and storage schemes, global social movements are exposing that these are in fact false solutions that perpetuate the climate crisis while increasing corporate profits. And movements are leading the way with real solutions, like community-led agroecology and community-controlled renewable energy.
Earlier this year, Grassroots International hosted a Solidarity Encounter on Ecological Crisis: False Solutions & Climate Justice Frameworks with Gopal Dayaneni of Movement Generation and Nnimmo Bassey of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). Health of Mother Earth Foundation is a partner of Grassroots International and an internationally known Nigerian ecological think tank and advocacy organization working to defend water and lives against the destruction caused by extractive industry. Movement Generation is an organization working to create a pathway towards a just transition towards local, living, loving economies. In their presentations, both Gopal and Nnimmo make abundantly clear the importance of being in right relationship with each other and the Earth as a critical first step to climate justice. Here are two powerful insights from Gopal and Nnimmo from the Solidarity Encounter, and we encourage you to watch the recording to learn more:
