Innocence Project and Midwest Innocence Project client Marcellus Williams has spent 24 years on death row for a crime that DNA evidence proves he didn’t do. In 1998, a woman in St. Louis was stabbed to death multiple times in her own home.

Marcellus was convicted of first-degree murder, robbery, and burglary, despite no concrete physical evidence linking him to the crime scene. His conviction was based primarily on the inconsistent testimonies of two incentivized witnesses who were motivated by self-interest and the reward money. Their stories were inconsistent with the crime scene evidence, their own prior statements, and even with each other.

Then in 2016, testing of DNA samples taken from the murder weapon excluded Marcellus as a contributor, proving he did not commit the crime and contradicting the testimony used to convict him — but his life is still at risk.
