John,
My name is Dani Amador. I’m the Mental Health Coordinator and a featured storyteller here at Immigrants Rising. In my work creating safe online spaces for undocumented folks to gather and heal, I try to be guided by my values like choosing to listen, being intentional with my words, and above all, honoring my truth. As someone who identifies as both undocumented and nonbinary, I recognize that renewing my commitment to truth-telling is important in order to feel free and in turn, encourage others to be as well.
I learned from a young age how to adapt to circumstances beyond my control, like having to move in with my grandparents when my mom left Mexico to work in the States. I found that when things got tough, I could quickly identify my priorities, which often were to protect myself and those around me, at any cost. But I didn’t always have the language to ask for the care I truly needed, to listen to that inner voice yearning to be nurtured and affirmed.

This year, as we celebrate the holiday season and look toward a new year, I invite you to take the time to listen to your inner voice. I invite you to join me in creating spaces where we can be honest about what we need and deserve. Spaces where we can be guided by our gut feelings and choose to show up as our authentic selves.
This work isn’t easy. It will take a collective effort to make a reality. Creating the future we want to live in demands our unwavering courage. It demands our commitment to telling, and hearing, the truth.
With care,
Dani Amador
