What constitutes an act of bravery? Nominees must have either:

* Sustained a physical injury while engaged in the lawful duties of the individual, and performing an act characterized as bravery by the agency head who makes the nomination, and being at personal risk; or
* Although not injured, performed an act characterized as bravery by the agency head who makes the nomination that placed the individual at risk of serious physical injury or death.

An agency head must use the online Law Enforcement Congressional Badge of Bravery Nomination System to submit each nomination.

To help you get inspired, here are some details from previous award recipients:

In 2019, four officers with the City of Virginia Beach Police Department were awarded the Congressional Badge of Bravery for disarming and detaining an active shooter who was randomly shooting his way through a municipal office building occupied by hundreds of people.

The officers—Detective Sergeants Peter Koepp and Mark Laino, and Master Police Officers Bobby Meis and Christopher Watkins—were among the first to respond to an active shooter alert. They quickly moved toward the sound of gunfire, pinned down the shooter, and mortally wounded him. Sergeant Koepp was shot by the gunman, but body armor prevented him from suffering a life-threatening injury.

Although the gunman killed 12 people, the quick, decisive, and courageous actions of these officers saved countless additional lives.
