Friend, it's Tim Alexander, and I'm a firm believer that folks should be held accountable for their actions, regardless of their wealth or connections. This isn't some stance I've adopted for the campaign trail. Here's a story:
When I was at the Philadelphia DA's office, a case came across my desk to prosecute an individual after an incident at a bar.
Attempting to live out some misguided action movie fantasy, a man smashed a bottle on the bar, shattering it into many dangerous pieces. That action resulted in a server being blinded and a musician getting severely hurt.
This was a serious incident deserving of meaningful consequences… Then his private defense attorney called, and I saw how someone tried to work the system because of power and connections.
I held firm: "Why should someone with means and connections receive special treatment? Why should this individual be treated any differently than someone who did the same thing but had a public defender?" Why should our values be compromised this way?
Long story short, that moment propelled me to become a civil rights attorney. |
All too often—including in my own life as a victim of documented police racial profiling—people try to go around the rules and compromise their values to avoid consequences. That's not how I operate. |
