Justice, A$AP

What to Know: The American rapper A$AP Rocky has been sprung from a Swedish jail, after political pressure from the U.S.

The TPPF Take: Too many defendants—both here and abroad—are locked up before they’re convicted, even when they pose no threat to the public.

“While the Department of State and President Trump went to bat for Rocky, we must not lose sight of reforming pretrial detention at home,” says TPPF’s Marc Levin. “There are nearly half a million Americans in pretrial detention on any given day. It’s time to reform our pretrial detention policies.”

Our Day In Court

What to Know: Employment lawyers and others acknowledge that in light of wins in lower courts, Dallas’ mandatory paid sick leave ordinance is facing “an uphill battle.”

The TPPF Take: Texas courts have already found municipal ordinances mandating paid sick leave unconstitutional.

“City government has no business interfering in the employer-employee relationship,” says TPPF’s Rob Henneke. “We will continue to fight these ordinances in court.”

Barred From The Ballot

What to Know: Voters in California are already suing over a new law barring candidates (including President Trump) from the state’s primary ballot unless they release their tax returns.

The TPPF Take: The U.S. Constitution already lays out the requirements to be president.

“Then-Gov. Jerry Brown vetoed an identical measure in 2017,” says TPPF’s Chuck DeVore. “Even he saw the slippery slope; if states could start adding requirements, where would it end? The U.S. Constitution makes it clear. States can’t add more.”
