I believe there is nothing more important than preserving the integrity of our election system. That's why I joined local officials in sounding the alarm on New York City's efforts to register tens of thousands of noncitizens residing at city-run migrant shelters to vote in our local elections. I've previously expressed concerns that migrants would be eligible to vote under Local Law 11 passed by the City Council under Mayor Bill de Blasio, which is why I joined other Staten Island Republicans in suing to stop the law from taking effect. If enacted, it would allow more than 800,000 noncitizens to vote so long as they've resided in New York City for 30 days or have acquired Work Authorization. In June, a Staten Island judge ruled in our favor, however, Mayor Adams appealed the decision and a final determination has not been made by the court, which may be the only thing stopping the City from proceeding with this scheme. Our office joined Blue Star Families and TV show Moving with the Military to unveil a new food pantry at Fort Wadsworth on Staten Island that serves 300+ U.S. Coast Guard families every month. Since coming to Congress, I've been advocating for increased pay and a greater Basic Allowance (BAH) for Housing for our service members so they don't have to rely on food assistance to survive. I'm proud to have recently voted for the National Defense Authorization Act that gives our military men & women a 5.2% basic pay increase - on top of the 4.6% they received last year - which is the largest pay raise in 20 years. Additionally, the bill also included my legislative language that require a study to further examine how we can help put Staten Island service members' BAH on par with the rest of the city. The passage of this bill is a win for the American people and our service members who've sacrificed so much for our nation and deserve to live comfortably. New York City has seen a 64% rise in shoplifting over the last four years (more than any other city) and we must keep the pressure up to get necessary changes to the radical laws that got us here. I also recently joined a bipartisan group of New York colleagues in writing to President Biden expressing our disapproval with his Administration for a new rule that threatens the ability of home health care providers to care for our nation's senior citizens, people with disabilities, and other vulnerable populations. The House passed bipartisan legislation I cosponsored to increase price transparency, make the cost of prescription drugs more affordable for our seniors, and support patients, health care workers, community health centers and hospitals. LEARN MORE IN THE NEWS Nicole Malliotakis Blasts Court's Ruling That New York Must Redraw Congressional Districts On “Forbes Newsroom,” Congresswoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.) excoriated a New York court’s ruling that the Empire State must redraw its congressional districts. Republicans flipped four congressional seats in New York in 2022. Now, this ruling could allow Democrats to redraw the map in a way that could turn as many as six seats from red to blue. Malliotakis claimed on “Forbes Newsroom” that the decision was “the Democrats’ latest attempt to tilt the scale, to give their candidates an advantage in next year’s election.” READ Pols rally against planned homeless shelter in Gravesend Gravesend neighbors and politicians want the city to cancel plans to open a homeless shelter in the neighborhood. Despite the rain on Sunday, Dec. 3, a large crowd of south Brooklyn residents gathered on 86th Street to protest the opening of a 150-bed facility at the corner of 25th Avenue. The facility, which is planned to be operated by Bronx-based VIP Community Services, is being developed by 86th Street NY LLC, and will likely be for single men. “It’s a terrible location for a shelter,” said Assembly Member William Colton, who organized the rally, in a statement, “In a main business district surrounded by residential areas, and near churches, mosques and schools.” Colton — along with U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis and Council Member-Elect Susan Zhuang — are among the leading voices of opposition to the shelter. At Sunday’s rally outside 2501 86th St., the pols claimed the shelter would be bad for both the neighborhood and the people who would live at the shelter.
