Hi John,
The climate summit COP28 presented a real opportunity to begin to end the fossil fuel era. But that opportunity crumbled before our eyes as our political leaders yet again danced to the tune of CEOs and shareholders.
The final text of COP28 made a call for a transition away from fossil fuels, but it was undermined by loopholes, dangerous distractions and huge funding holes. In short, countries agreed ‘we must reduce the use of coal, oil and gas, but we’re not going to agree who or how’.
Every small step forward in tackling the climate crisis is hard-fought. In the year ahead we will be fighting to close the loopholes, ignore the distractions, and plug those funding holes. We still need a global exit plan from fossil fuels and a permanent polluters’ tax to fund a significant loss and damage contribution for climate-vulnerable communities.
And John, I’m asking you to get involved.
Because when leaders fail, we need to step up. At Global Justice Now we are already picking up the pieces and building upon the work being done by our allies in the global movement fighting for their communities.
We are determined to build a mass movement for a global exit plan from fossil fuels and to do this we need as many people as possible to support our work. Campaigning for structural change takes a huge amount of time and resources, so if you are able to, please join us as a member today.
Our campaigns are powered by passionate individuals like you and the more regular support we have, the greater our reach and impact.

** Hope is still alive but our mission is far from over!

Despite the loopholes, COP28 did send an unprecedented signal to the world that governments agree a transition away from fossil fuels is necessary.
History will be made if all of those countries, civil society leaders and everyone who came together to force change at COP28 and beyond, now transfer their energy and determination into making sure that a proper fossil fuel phase-out actually happens. And I hope you’ll join us to make that happen.
The next steps here in the UK are to:
* Secure endorsement from the UK government of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty; a global plan for a fast and fair phase-out of fossil fuels and a transition to clean energy.
* Make the biggest polluters pay for loss and damage and ensure that the UK contributes new money to the loss and damage fund established at the UN climate summit in 2022.
* Push for changes to the rules of the global economy driving the climate crisis by dismantling climate-wrecking trade deals and forcing through green industrial strategies.
Global Justice Now is largely powered by donations from people like you. We don’t accept money from big business or government funds because that’s what allows us to stay independent, outspoken and take on issues that others are afraid to touch. We want to hit the ground running in 2024 and be ready to take on big polluters and build UK-wide endorsement for the Fossil Fuel Treaty. Will you join us?
