1) The South Is Now the Nation’s Economic Engine
The 2023 (July) state and U.S. population estimates have just been published by the Census Bureau. The national population increased by 1.6 million, 1.1 million (about 70%) of which was net international migration. Natural population growth (births minus deaths) continues to decline to 500,000 in 2023. This is more than half below the 1,100,000 annual average during the 2010s.

For our young readers: We need more babies people! Get going.

But the continuing mega story of the reshaping of America is the stampede of people out of the northeast and now even out of the far west to the southern states. It’s a reverse migration back TO the South from the first half of the 20th century when Americans moved out of the deep South – especially blacks. In just the past year, the South gained 706,000, while the Northeast lost 323,000, the West lost 297,000 and the Midwest lost 86,000.

Broadening the analysis to total domestic migration since the 2020 Census – a period that covers approximately the pandemic and post-pandemic period – the rankings show California and New York losing a combined net of over two million people to domestic migration in three years. It is clear that the northern and midwestern state COVID lockdowns unleashed a stampede of families out of those states to places like Florida, Texas, and North Carolina that quickly reopened. And three years later they haven’t stopped coming.

Do policies like taxes and forced union rules matter? The top thirteen states gaining the most people are all red or purple states that have low taxes and are right-to-work states. Ten of the eleven states with the biggest losses are blue states with high taxes and forced union rules.

2) Harvard President Claudine Gay Is a Serial Plagiarist
In Harvard’s code of conduct plagiarism can lead to expulsion – unless, of course, you are the president of the university and check all the diversity boxes. In that case, when you’re caught plagiarizing you get a vote of confidence from the board of directors.

Claudine Gay somehow survived the recent congressional hearing when she declared that calling for the genocide of Jews does not violate Harvard's code of conduct. She even survived the revelation that she plagiarized parts of her PhD dissertation. Gay is by all accounts a second to third-rate scholar who probably would have struggled to gain tenure at a school like, say, Toledo. Lucky for her, her scholarship is so unexceptional that until very recently no one apparently ever bothered to read anything she wrote.

But now reporters are scouring through her writings, and they’ve hit the mother lode.

The Free Beacon reports:

The new allegations, which were submitted to Harvard's research integrity officer, Stacey Springs, include…dozens of additional cases in which Gay quoted or paraphrased authors without proper attribution. They range from missing quotation marks around a few phrases or sentences to entire paragraphs lifted verbatim.

The full list of examples spans seven of Gay's publications—two more than previously reported—which comprise almost half of her scholarly output. Though the Harvard Corporation said earlier this month that it initiated an independent review Gay's work in October and found "no violation of Harvard's standards for research misconduct," that probe focused on just three papers.

Example number 30 is the most remarkable – she cribbed two sentences of the ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS in her dissertation from another scholar. That's a new one.

We assume Harvard will sweep all of this under the rug. Amazingly, the board of the most prestigious university in the world doesn’t seem to care that in the last two months, the school’s reputation has been perhaps permanently tarnished.

3) America’s Largest Tax Shelter
Speaking of Harvard, this is looking more and more like a money management firm, not an educational institution.

Why does it get special tax treatment? There is no tax on the money going in and no tax on the money flowing out. The university endowments are one of the biggest leakages in the tax system with hundreds of billions of dollars never taxed. The money ISN’T used to reduce college costs. Harvard charges more than $70,000 a year in tuition. By some estimates, it could charge the students nothing and pay for their education through the endowment, now until forever, and still not run out of money. Instead, the money goes to edifices and fat salaries.

Here's one possible reform: take away the tax exemption for money donated to universities and use the revenues to cut the capital gains tax on real investment to 15%.

4) Canada To Ban Gasoline Car Sales By 2035
Oh, Canada. What have you done? Our northern neighbor has joined California and New York in banning automobiles. Well, at least cars that have a combustible engine and run on gas. Ottawa has officially joined the Coercive Electric Vehicle Coalition. On Tuesday, Justin Trudeau's government announced that no gasoline or diesel cars, trucks or SUVs will be sold in Canada starting in 2035.

New regulations will require zero-emission vehicles to make up 20 percent of all new car sales, with the quota rising to 100 percent in stages.

[link removed]
Canadian carmakers warned that the new rules will create a public backlash because clogged lots show consumers are not accepting the EV transition and many drivers can’t afford the average $14,000 price gap between gas and electric vehicles.

Tim Reuss of the Canadian Automobile Dealers Association also cites reports that EV mileage lowered by as much as 41% in below-freezing temperatures. Even the government’s own analysis admits that people living in rural areas could face serious difficulties. Earlier this month, a severe cold snap led to massive traffic jams and clogged highways in Germany and Austria.

The last time we checked, the winters were awfully cold and icy in Places like Alberta and Montreal.

[link removed]
In addition, only 25,000 public chargers are currently available to Canadians, far short of the 442,000 public chargers and 2.2 million multi-unit residential charges it’s estimated will be needed by 2035.

Would anyone like to bet whether Canada’s Mad Mandate banning sales of gas vehicles will be implemented on time?

Earlier this year, Britain threw in the towel and delayed its 2030 ban on internal combustion car sales by five years – the first of what we predict will be more delays anywhere the mandates exist.

But just in case, we advise all Americans and Canadians to stock up on gas cars NOW, while you still have the chance.

5) The Left’s Latest Spin: "Crime Is Down"
The New York Times and other news agencies are triumphally spewing out stories claiming that crime in America declined significantly over the last year, according to the FBI.

The FBI data shows property crime fell 6.3 percent compared to the same time last year and all categories of crime except for auto theft went down.

But a new Gallup poll finds that 92% of Republicans, 78% of independents, and 58% of Democrats believe crime is rising. How to explain the discrepancy? The New York Times and others say too many Americans are brainwashed by watching Fox News.

But there are a lot of reasons to believe crime rates are still high. A Justice Department survey of criminal victimization last year found a lot of crime goes unreported, and indeed more people are reporting they were victims of violent crime.

There are also flaws in the FBI data. In 2022, for example, some of the largest police departments in the country didn’t report their data to the FBI.

Even if the FBI data is correct, the murder rate is still higher than it was in 2019 – pre-pandemic. One possible reason for the slight decline in the murder rate is that a record one out of seven registered voters are now legally carrying concealed handguns for protection. We bet you won’t read THAT statistic in the Times.
