Tips for Parenting an Adult Child

Parents and caregivers often reach out to our helpline with questions on how to parent an adult child with substance use problems. In response, our experts have created a guide for how to maintain positive relationships with adult children. In this guide you can find tips on:

Effective communication techniques:

Stay calm and focus on your main priority – their health and safety.

Structure the conversation with layers using the “Information Sandwich” approach:

- Top layer invitation: “I heard something interesting about safety today that I wanted to run by you. Ok?”
- Meat of the sandwich – a request: “There is a free phone app that people use to alert anyone they choose if there is an overdose. It’s called the Brave app and I’d like you to use it.”
- Bottom layer to check in: What do you think?”

Problem-solving strategies:

Focus on one issue at a time (i.e., a family concerned about a child leaving home).

Brainstorm possible solutions – include all options no matter how far-fetched one may seem.

Pick one solution that seems doable to you.

Focusing on One's Own Wellness

The holidays can be such a special time of year. They can also be very emotionally overwhelming and triggering. Taking care of your emotional and physical needs allows you to show your child how to cope in a healthy way. We hope these tips help get you through those tough moments.

Reach out to supportive people in your life

- Sometimes you just need to talk to someone who will listen without judgment.

Delegate

- Each thing on your plate can add to feeling overwhelmed – try to decrease that load when you can. You can’t do it all. Ask for help when you can.

Spend time outside

- Go for a walk or do one of your favorite activities outdoors.
- Simply being outside can help your body reset.

Take deep breaths

- Taking a second to focus on your breathing can calm you down.
- Inhale a deep breath through your nose, hold it for a beat and exhale through your mouth.
- Leaning your back against a wall can also have a grounding effect.

While it may seem difficult, try filling your life with something positive on a daily basis for the next week. It will be a gift not only to yourself, but also for your child and other loved ones.
