John, as 2023 comes to a close, I’m preparing for a renewed push to sign more states onto our solution to fix the broken Electoral College – National Popular Vote.
You’ve probably seen a few emails from me on how we can fix what many Common Cause members say is the biggest problem facing our democracy today, but here’s a quick refresher:
National Popular Vote is an agreement between states to award their electoral votes to the candidate that wins the most votes in a presidential election.
That means that no one could become president without winning the majority of Americans’ support – like George W. Bush did in 2000 and Donald Trump did in 2016.
NPV is the long-awaited reform our Electoral College desperately needs. And we only need 65 more electoral votes worth of states to join in for it to go into effect.
I can’t emphasize enough how important NPV is to achieving a truly representative democracy. As it stands now, presidential candidates only need to campaign in a handful of swing states – ignoring two thirds of the country and discouraging voters from showing up at all in those states.
And I don’t need to tell you how much difference just one presidential term can make: Supreme Court Justices, executive orders, and even declaring war! The stakes are simply too high to allow an individual that didn’t win the majority vote into office.
It’s no secret we’re working in a broken system. But the solution is within reach. Already this year, members like you helped pass NPV in Minnesota, proving that your action makes a difference. And we came so close to passing NPV in Michigan – laying the groundwork we’ll use to push the bill through the state legislature in the new year.
John, groundbreaking change like this takes time. We’re years into our strategy to pass NPV in states across the country, and we’ve made so much progress.
But keeping this momentum going will take a lot of work. We need to make a concerted effort in the states that have yet to pass NPV – convincing key legislators, educating voters, and making sure we build a critical mass to fix the broken Electoral College. But we can’t do this without you.
